Andre Russell, Faf du Plessis and Angelo Mathews are some of the top names picked by the Colombo Kings franchise in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) player’s draft. The draft was held online.
Mathews is the local icon in the team while du Plessis and Russell are the two overseas icons. The other notable names picked by the Colombo-based franchise are former Indian IPL players – Manvinder Singh Bisla and Manpreet Gony. In Dav Whatmore, Colombo Kings have also picked a big name for their backroom staff.
Whatmore has ample knowledge of Sri Lankan cricket. He was the coach when Sri Lanka won their first and only 50-over World Cup till date in 1996. Later, Whatmore had also coached Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe.
Among others, Kandy Tuskers picked up Kushal Perera as the local icon while Chris Gayle and Liam Plunkett were picked as the two overseas signings. The team will be coached by Hashan Tillakaratne. Galle Gladiators have Lasith Malinga as the local icon while Shahid Afridi and Colin Ingram are the two overseas signings. Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Moin Khan will coach the side.
Dambulla Hawks, on the other hand, have picked Dashun Shanaka as the local icon while David Miller and Carlos Brathwaite as the overseas signings. The Hawks team will be coached by Jon Lewis. Jaffna Stallions have Thisara Perera as the local icon and Dawid Malan and Wanindu Hasaranga as the overseas signing.
The Lanka Premier League is scheduled to be played from November 21 to December 13, 2020, at two venues -Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy and Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota.
