Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Gamage returns to Sri Lanka mid-way from Windies, where they are touring for a three-Test series, a release stated on Wednesday (June 13).

While Gamage suffered a fractured finger while batting in the first Test, Mathews cited personal reasons. Mathews scored 11 and 31 in respective innings in the first Test that Sri Lanka lost by 226 runs, while Gamage went wicketless.

Dasun Shanaka and Danushka Gunathilaka will replace them respectively. They are likely to arrive the Caribbean Island tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Shanaka was due to travel with Sri Lanka A squad to Bangladesh. They will play three four-day matches followed by three fifty over games.

However, this will be a huge blow for the Lankans, who will be eyeing to make a comeback in the series. Moreover, the second of three tests starts Thursday (June 14) at Gros Islet.

The visitors struggled due to their weak links in the batting orders. They failed to register a single half-century in their first innings, while in the second drop Kushal Mendia was the lone warrior.

The bowling unit also didn’t look too strong against a revamped Windies team. They scored runs easily as they declared at 414 runs in their first innings. Sri Lanka will have a lot of work at hand ahead of the second Test.
