Ashes 2017/18: Alastair Cook Reaches 12,000 Test Runs in Sydney

England opener and former captain Alastair Cook becomes the 6th batsman in the history of Test cricket to reach 12,000 runs.

Cook reached the milestone on his way to scoring ten runs during England’s second in Sydney Pink Test.

The 33-year-old Cook took 151 matches to achieve this feat. He is also the youngest cricketer to reach this milestone.

However, he couldn’t take his team to safety, as England is trailing by 264 runs in second innings with seven wickets in hand (by the time the article of written). England had already lost the Ashes urn 3-0 after their defeat in Perth by an innings and 41 runs.

Tendulkar (15,921), Ponting (13,378), South African Jacques Kallis (13,289, India’s Rahul Dravid (13,288), and Sri Lanka’s Kumara Sangakkara (12,400) are the other four batsmen to achieve this landmark.

Cook knocked one off Mitchell Starc to reach the milestone, as the whole stadium stood up to applaud. However, Cook didn’t show any excitement, as he knew he has a job in hand. Cook is also first England batsmen to reach this feat.

Australia put up 649 runs including three centuries from Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, and Mitchell Marsh in reply to England’s 346 in the first dig.
