Ashes 2017/18: Twitter Reacts as Australia Crush England to Win Series 4-0
Updated - 10 Jan 2019, 01:08 AM
Australia thrashed England by an innings and 123 runs on Monday (January 8) at the Sydney Cricket Ground to complete a thumping 4-0 Ashes win.
Josh Hazlewood took the last wicket of the match as well as the series with James Anderson edging one behind. The England star wanted to review the decision only to find out that his side had run-out of reviews. Captain Joe Root, who got hospitalised due to viral gastroenteritis bug, could not come out to bat and match ended with England on 180 for nine.

With Root unable to come out at the start of the day, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali started the proceedings on the final day with England needed 210 runs more to avoid an innings defeat. The duo put on a dodgy stand on a pitch showing little wear although off-spinner Nathan Lyon was testing the batsmen to the fullest. Moeen and Bairstow kept the hosts at bay for almost an hour before Lyon dismissed the Moeen (13) for the seventh time in the series.
Root then entered the field with his bat and was given a rousing reception from the crowd. The England star batted through until lunch, adding 16 runs to his overnight score of 42 but could not come out to bat after the break. England started on 144 for five after the lunch, but any slim hopes of saving the game soon ended when Bairstow was dismissed by Pat Cummins in the third over after the restart.
Tom Curran scored 23 and tried to delay the inevitable for a while, but the lack of assistance from the other end did not help his cause, as England’s nightmare ended with Anderson’s dismissal.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match:

Started with a little bit of promise but fizzled out in the end….Australia wins the #Ashes. The era of home dominance continues. To be honest, England never had a chance with that squad…

Ashes series are becoming too predictable … England are a long way from winning in these conditions IMO but Australia are a lot closer to winning in the UK … England cannot just relax and believe because it’s at home with the Duke ball in 2019 they will win .. #Ashes

Typical of England under Trevor Bayliss.
Always recklessly persisting with “rock”, whatever the situation. #Ashes pic.twitter.com/nNTLQhQhS3

I must confess that while I thought Australia were the more fancied side I didn't think the difference would be this large. Playing away is a very tough examination. #Ashes

Although cricket is a team game, but absence of one key player like Ben Stokes can make a huge difference. In this series, England missed Stokes badly !!#Ashes #AUSvENG #Ashes2017
