Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief executive, Wasim Khan, is positive about the Australian team to travel to Pakistan for a full-fledged tour early in 2022.

Australia last travelled to Pakistan in 1998, led by Mark Taylor. It has been 22 years since the men in yellow visited the Asian country. Pakistan has though hosted Australia in England in 2010, and later in the UAE. Due to security reasons, Australia has refrained from visiting Pakistan for more than two decades.

We’re looking forward to welcoming them in 2022: Wasim Khan

On Wednesday, Wasim Khan confirmed that the England team will tour Pakistan for the first time in 16 years. He also added in the statement that they are expecting Australia as well to visit Pakistan for their FTP (Future Tours Programm) commitment in early 2022.

Wasim Khan said that while nothing is confirmed as there is plenty of stuff to discuss between the two boards, however, they are looking at the window of February and March to host Australia. He said by 2022, plenty of cricket will be played in the country as major teams such as South Africa, New Zealand, and England are due for a tour to Pakistan.

According to a report in the newspaper Dawn, Wasim Khan said, “Our international cricket departments are working together on the schedule for February and March 2022. By then a lot of cricket will have been played in Pakistan.

“There’s been no formal announcement at the moment because there is still a lot of cricket to be played. But all things going well, we’re looking forward to welcoming them in 2022.”

Earlier Australia was supposed to tour Pakistan for just a quick limited-overs series. However, the PCB chief would like them to stay longer for series’ in all three formats. South Africa will tour Pakistan for Tests and T20s in January 2021 followed by New Zealand for limited-overs matches before England arrive in October for 2 T20Is. Sri Lanka played a Test series in Pakistan last year and recently Zimbabwe was hosted in Rawalpindi.

“All of those things are being discussed at the moment. Ideally, as a PCB we would like them to come for an extended period of time, so we can complete both white and red-ball obligations,” Wasim Khan added.

Last year Pakistan visited Australia- they lost the T20I series and were clean-sweeped in the two-Test series. The Babar Azam led side will tour New Zealand for 3 T20Is and 2 Tests starting 18th December.
