Former Indian National Cricket team opener Virender Sehwag shared high praise on debutant Mayank Agarwal, who played a scintillating knock on day one of the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne.

Meanwhile, India returned on a high on the first day of the third Test at Melbourne. The scorecard shows they’ve crawled at 2.42 run per over, but they’ve been the more dominant party on display here. If you take the brief Mitchell Starc spell, towards the end of the day with the second new ball, out of the equation, there was nothing really for the Aussies to show in the final session.

Virat Kohli joined the action after opener Mayank Agarwal‘s dismissal for 76 right at the stroke of tea as India reached 123 for 2 at the break. Since then Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara showed grit and patience to dominate the Aussie attack. Pujara played a more circumspect inning, soaking up plenty of balls before letting rip on the occasional loose delivery.

The duo added 92 runs for the third wicket to take their team in line for a massive first innings score. Pujara remained unbeaten on 67 runs while Kohli finished off the day three short of a half-century.

Following the day’s play, Virender Sehwag lauded Mayank Agarwal for a wonderful debut at the MCG. He also noted that India will have to bat big to post a big first innings total.

Very happy for @mayankcricket . Has waited for his opportunity and has made it count on the big stage. Pujara solid as ever and Kohli looking good. India will need to bat big in the first innings #BoxingDayTest,” the tweet read.
