A few days after Sri Lanka begun its criminal investigation on 2011 World Cup final was ‘sold’ allegations made by their ex-Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, BCCI Anti Corruption Unit chief Ajit Singh expressed his surprise over it. Aluthgamage did not have any proofs to back his claims on the 2011 World Cup but hinted at the involvement of some officials.

Following his claims, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena had took a dig on him and said that his statements are ‘politically oriented’. “Then no one needs to speculate and can get to the bottom of this. That should be the most prudent course of action,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying by Sri Lankan outlet newsfirst.lk.

BCCI ACU Chief: I am surprised the issue has come up after 10 years

BCCI ACU chief Ajit Singh said that he is surprised that the matter came up after 10 years. He also said that as the investigation is already delayed for a long period of time, the investigation will be difficult and it would be hard to provide evidence.

“I am surprised the issue has come up after 10 years,”said Ajit Singh to THE WEEK. “As per my experience, more delayed the investigation, more difficult it is to get the evidence.”

K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, the secretary to the sports ministry, has now said that a criminal investigation to the 2011 World Cup allegations has begun with police and Special Investigation Unit on sports-related offences looking into the matter.

“A criminal investigation has begun,” K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, the secretary to the sports ministry, told AFP.

“It is handled by the (police) independent Special Investigation Unit on sports-related offences.”

India had lifted the World Cup after 27 years.
