BCCI Appoints Former SC Judge Vineet Saran As BCCI Ombudsman And Ethics Officer

Former Supreme Court judge Vineet Saran has been appointed as the new ethics officer and ombudsman for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on July 19, 2022. He will be taking over from Justice (Retd) D K Jain.

DK Jain had retired from his post in June last year and now Vineet Saran will take over as BCCI’s ethics officer and ombudsman, filling the dual posts lying vacant for a year. Saran, 65, is a former Chief Justice of Odisha High Court, and also served as a judge in Karnataka and Allahabad High Court.

“Honorable Justice Saran’s appointment was made last month,” a BCCI official told PTI.

When contacted, Saran, who calls himself a cricket lover, said: “I took charge last month, but I have not passed any order yet.”

BCCI Media Rights, Domestic Cricket On Apex Council Table

Thanks to the monetary windfall after the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights, the BCCI Apex Council will prepare the ground for the home season media rights (2023 onwards) and a full-fledged domestic season after two years at its meeting on Thursday.

Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic for the last two years, the majority of the Apex Council meetings have been held virtually and this will be the first time the members will be meeting in person at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.

The 12-point agenda includes an “update on the 2022-2023 domestic season, gradation of umpires and media rights for cricket in India”.

Current rights holder Star India had paid Rs 6138.1 crore for the 2018-2023 cycle but the figure is set to go much higher considering the massive gains from the IPL media rights which fetched Rs 48390 crore.

“The media rights will be discussed as well as the upcoming domestic season,” a official said.

Ranji Trophy was not hosted for the first time in history in 2021 due to the pandemic, but returned in 2022 but in a curtailed form and was played in two halves. Each team only got three league games.

However, with the Covid situation subsiding, the BCCI did away with bio-bubbles for the recent home international series and the domestic season is likely to be a full-fledged one.
