Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Indian pace-bowling spearhead in white-ball cricket, has reckoned that the Indian Premier League must take place this year since it is important for both cricketing and financial reasons.

The 13th edition of the IPL was originally scheduled to take place between March 29-May 24 but the onset and subsequent outbreak of Covid-19 forced the BCCI to postpone the tournament for an indefinite period of time.

The BCCI is now mulling at staging the cash-rich league in the September 26-November 08 window but that of course depends on the International Cricket Council’s decision on the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place from October 18 in Australia.

“The IPL must happen. The tournament is important for both cricketing and financial reasons,” Bhuvneshwar Kumar said at a webinar organised by GainAccess Sports & Entertainment and Sportz Power.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar also went on to urge the ICC to come up with an alternative as far as shining the ball is concerned in the post corona world.

“I hope the ICC comes up with some artificial way by which we can shine the ball. You need to do it when you bowl in swinging conditions in (places like) England. Even the spinners need it.” he added.

Bhuvneshwar was set to make his international comeback post his injury with the ODI series against South Africa back in March. The first ODI of that series was washed out, post which the series was abandoned due to the coronavirus outbreak

Bhuvi said he has thought that any damages caused by the virus would be over by now.

“After the first ODI against South Africa (which was washed out at Dharamshala on March 12), we were scheduled to play the second match at Lucknow, but the entire series was abandoned,” Bhuvneshwar Kumar revealed.

“I was coming back to the Indian team after a gap of four months, following an injury. I had then thought it (the problem created by the virus) would be soon over.” he added.

Meanwhile, if the IPL does not take place this year, the BCCI could end up losing close to Rs 4000 crores.
