Chris Gayle, the swashbuckling West Indian opener, will be on the verge of scripting a milestone for himself if he does take guard against the Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals in Kings XI Punjab’s 2020 campaign opener in Dubai.
Gayle, who has been one the powerhouse of the IPL, during the course of the last 12 IPL seasons, is just 16 runs away to cross the 4500-run mark in the tournament’s history. The ‘Universe Boss’ has thus far featured in 125 IPL games, scoring 4484 runs at an average of 41.13 and a blistering strike-rate of 151.02 which also includes 28 half-centuries and six three-figure scores, with his career-best being the brutal 175 against Pune Warriors India back in 2013
Overall, Chris Gayle will become just the 6th player to cross the 4500-run mark in IPL cricket, after Virat Kohli [5412 in 177 games], Suresh Raina [5368 runs in 193 games], Rohit Sharma [4898 runs in 188 games], David Warner [4706 runs in 126 games] and Shikhar Dhawan [4569 runs in 159 games].
Will Chris Gayle play the opening game or will KXIP go for middle-order reinforcements?
Not only Chris Gayle, his skipper KL Rahul will be on the cusp of the milestone when he strides out to bat on Sunday. The stylish opener is 23 runs adrift from becoming the 20th Indian to cross the 2000-run-mark in IPL cricket.
Ahead of his sides’ tournament opener against the Delhi Capitals, skipper KL Rahul lavished praise on his team besides adding that the side is looking to play a good brand of cricket and hopefully make the season a memorable one for the franchise and its fans.
”The team has been fantastic, we’ve been getting along great and are looking forward to playing a good brand of cricket and making this season a memorable one. We’re confident, we’re motivated and we are really excited to be a part of this edition of the Indian Premier League.” KL Rahul said.
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if KXIP goes with the pair of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul at the top or will they play Nicholas Pooran in place of Gayle in order to strengthen their middle-order.
