Cricket South Africa has announced squad for the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe. South Africa has included Dean Elgar who returns to the ODI side after a gap of three years. The southpaw Test batsman replaces Hashim Amla who is ruled out due to a finger injury. Meanwhile, Faf du Plessis will also not tour Zimbabwe as he is still recovering from the shoulder injury.
Therefore, South Africa’s left-handed batsman JP Duminy will hold the captaincy reins for the ODI series. Meanwhile, Dean Elgar had last played for the South African team in 2015. Thus, the southpaw opener will like to make the most of his opportunity.
Elgar returns after three overs.
“Hashim sustained a tear to the tendon in his left fifth digit while fielding during the recently-concluded Caribbean Premier League. The injury will need up to three weeks to heal making him unavailable for the series against Zimbabwe,” team manager Mohammed Moosajee confirmed.
“The CSA medical committee has also withdrawn Faf from the ODI series. He has not made a satisfactory recovery from his shoulder injury and has been given more time to make a complete recovery. We are hopeful he will be fit enough to return to lead the T20 side for the three-match series against Zimbabwe.”
Elgar had last featured in the South African coloured jersey when he played against India in Mumbai. The left-hander has only 98 runs in the six matches at an average of 24.50.
Meanwhile, National Selection Committee convenor Linda Zondi hopes Elgar will be able to make the most of his chance.
“We have said that the Zimbabwe series is an opportunity to further explore our ODI options and the unfortunate injury to Hashim gives us an opportunity to see what Dean is capable of in the limited-overs format. He has always been on our radar having put in consistent performances both in South Africa and the UK. He brings a wealth of valuable experience to the batting group in Hashim and Faf’s absence,” he said.
The first One-Dayer will take place on 30 September. Subsequently, the T20I series will follow the One-Day series.
