Winning and losing is part of any sporting event as one side goes on with vociferous celebrations, there is a disappointment for the other.

Cricket is a game that has a history of more than 150 years old, even cricket historians will need a long life to cover all the spheres of the game.

England and Australia played the first international match on March 15, 1877, in Melbourne. England lost the first official Test match to Australia by 45 runs.

The game has seen many thrilling and close battles on the pitch that have given plenty of memories for the viewers to cherish.

Let us look at the 10 international teams with the most defeats across all formats.

Top 10 Teams With The Most Losses Across All Formats In International Cricket

10) Bangladesh: 418

Bangladesh became an associate member of the ICC in the year 1977. The Bangladesh national cricket team won the ICC Trophy in 1997 to qualify for the 1999 World Cup.

Bangladesh has been participating in various ICC tournaments for the last 15 years but has never featured in any major final. They have appeared in three Asia Cup finals but ended up being runners-up on all instances.

Bangladesh lost all matches of Group 1 in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and recently they made history by winning their first Test against New Zealand before they lost to share the two-match Test series 1-1.

Bangladesh has lost 95 Test matches, 245 ODI games and 78 T20 Internationals.

9) South Africa: 434

South Africa came back to play international cricket in 1991 after serving 22 years of ban owing to political tensions.

South Africa are very much trolled for losing despite having the command of the game in their favour, fans use the ‘C-word (you can hear it in your voice) to describe how consistent they were losing big games.

South Africa has never won an ICC tournament in the history of cricket in spite of having the best players in the world in their team.

However, the Proteas are throwing an impression that things might change as they have started with a drastic transition under the leadership of Dean Elgar (Tests) and Temba Bavuma.

South Africa has lost 153 Tests, 221 One-Day International matches and 60 T20 International matches.

Pakistan has lost most to Australia (in 33 Tests), West Indies (in 71 ODIs) and England (in 13 T20Is). Pakistan has lost 134 Tests, 417 ODIs and 64 T20 International matches.

6) New Zealand: 621

Here we talk about the nice guys of cricket who give their best on the pitch and always keep punching above their weights.

New Zealand have never won an ICC World Cup and they won the inaugural ICC Test Championship last year.

The Black Caps lost the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 final to their Trans-Tasman rivals Australia in UAE.

New Zealand has lost 177 Tests, 374 One-Day International matches and 70 T20 Internationals.

5) Sri Lanka: 622

Sri Lanka is in the process of a resurgence since their key players like Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara retired in 2015.

During 2018, Sri Lanka had a record of 31.11% (wins), 60.74% (losses) and 8.15% (tied, no results and draws), they were even behind Bangladesh and West Indies at that point. Sri Lanka has not reached the semi-final of any ICC event since they won the T20 World Cup in 2014.

Sri Lanka has lost 113 Tests, 432 ODI matches and 77 T20 International matches and they have lost the most ODI matches amongst all teams.

4) Australia: 629

Australia used to be the team that everyone wanted to defeat at one point but now it’s not the same anymore.

Ask India how they manage to defeat them twice in a Test series in their own backyard or ask Bangladesh how they managed to thump them 4-1 in a T20I series.

But the fearless cricket is something that the Australians wouldn’t want to compromise with as they back to back won the T20 WC and the Ashes. Australia has lost 226 Tests, 334 ODIs and 69 T20 Internationals.

3) India: 655

India is a formidable side in the current world with the bench strength they have at their disposal. India have suffered many humiliating defeats in their cricket journey so have tasted some thumping victories.

Whenever India exits from a World Cup event there is always a great level of chaos behind home. Many tough decisions are required to take place like the ones during the 2007 WC (against Bangladesh) or the recent one in UAE.

India has lost 173 Tests, 431 ODIs and 51 T20 International matches.

2) West Indies: 671

West Indies was at its best during the period between 1970-1990 but today if one would examine their strength then it could be discovered only in T20 cricket.

In Tests and ODIs the West Indies aren’t even considered the favourites even when they play a bilateral series. The current ICC rankings are enough to speak about how poor West Indies’ performance has dipped.

West Indies has lost 204 Tests, 388 ODIs and 79 T20 International matches. The two-time T20 champions have lost the most T20Is amongst all teams.

1) England: 717

England has played the most matches across all three formats than any other in the international stage (1953). So it is obvious that their name would appear on the top of the list.

But in hindsight of the Ashes, an avid cricket fan would question the quality or approach that has fallen in England cricket in recent years.
