Cricket South Africa (CSA) president Chris Nenzani has not supported their director of cricket Graeme Smith’s backing of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly to be next ICC head. CSA president has said that we should follow the global governing council protocol and the board protocol to decide which candidate to follow.

The comments from Nenzani comes after Smith had backed Ganguly saying, “The president of the ICC now becomes a very key position in terms of how the game can progress and progress at the right level. It would be great to see a cricket man like Ganguly to get into the role of the ICC president. That will be good for the game. He understands the game, he has played at the highest level and he is respected. That is going to be an interesting time for international and it is going to be a great appointment”.

Ganguly is the first India cricketer after the Maharaja of Vizianagaram to become the president of BCCI. Former England captain David Gower also feels to be a BCCI president you need to be a very deft politician and need to have a reputation. Adding, the former India captain and one of the most successful captains has incidentally got it all and can head the ICC in near future.

CSA president: Once the nomination have been filed the board will give the chairman the mandate to exercise his vote

Chris Nenzani wants to follow the protocol to back a candidate. He has asserted that no nomination has been filed as of now and once it has been done CSA will officially allow its members to exercise their vote.

“We have the highest regard for the opinions of our Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith, who is a well-respected figure in world cricket and has already made an immense contribution in fulfilling his mandate to make our cricket teams world leaders again,” said CSA president and chairperson of the board, Nenzani, in a CSA press release

“At the moment we don’t want to anticipate any candidates who may be nominated for this important position to lead the game we all love,” he added.

Current ICC president Shashank Manohar has nearly completed his two-year role. The next elections is slated to take place in July with Ganguly one of the favourites to win it.
