Meanwhile, the modern-day legend admitted he wanted to step while still at the top. He took to Twitter to share a video message to announce his retirement.

After 114 test matches, 228 one day internationals and 78 T20 internationals it is time for others to take over. I’ve had my turn and to be honest I’m tired,” he said

The Proteas legend averaged over 50 in both Tests and One-Day International matches. He was one of the leading batsmen of this generation and could score runs at will.

De Villiers enjoyed a blistering international career that ran well over a decade. His remarkable exploits on the cricket field made him one of the most loved cricket stars across the world.

Meanwhile, de Villiers’ career was in peril after he had taken an indefinite break from Tests last year.

However, he returned towards the end of the last year to represent the Proteas in that format. He played a pivotal role in South Africa’s win over India and Australia.

There will not be another de Villiers

Steyn, who started his journey along with de Villiers got emotional while writing the goodbye note. He shared some good moments they share while growing as a cricketer.

The paceman also congratulated him for having a prosperous international career. In conclusion, Steyn mentioned there would not be another de Villiers.

We started this cricket thing way back in 2004. We’ve seen the world, met amazing people, played the great teams and beaten the best there is in it too,” Steyn wrote on Instagram.

We’ve shared change rooms, been roomies, golf partners, McDonald’s after late nights. You’re a champion man in my book bud, and I’m pretty sure in everyone else’s too. Congratulations on a stellar international career, it’s been a incredible journey and privilege to have shared it with you. There’ll never be another Ab de Villiers,” he added.
