England Women’s team cricketer Danielle Wyatt congratulated Alastair Cook as the latter bid farewell to international cricket following the culmination of five-match Test series against India.

Meanwhile, Cook announced his retirement on Monday (September 2) after a string of poor performance in the ongoing Test series. He has failed to score any 50-plus scores in eight innings so far in this series.

Furthermore, he has only one half-century to his name in this year so far.

However, he is the highest scorer for England with 12,254 Test runs and 32 Test centuries so far in 158 Tests.

Speaking on his retirement, Cook feels this is the right time to step down to make way for young guns in the national fold.

I have achieved more than I could have ever imagined and feel very privileged to have played for such a long time alongside some of the greats of the English game. The thought of not sharing the dressing room, again, with some of my teammates was the hardest part of my decision, but I know the timing is right,” he said.

Cook, meanwhile, will continue playing domestic cricket with his County side, Essex.

“I would also like to thank Essex County Cricket Club for their help and support ever since I was 12, and I can’t wait to get fully involved with them in the 2019 season. I wish the England team every success in the future, and I will be watching with great excitement,” he added.

The southpaw also shared special thanks to former England skipper Graham Gooch. Gooch holds a significant place in Cook’s career and is responsible for his success.
