Former Australia vice-captain David Warner has been suspended from international cricket following his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal during the 3rd Test against South Africa last month. It was during the lunch break on the 3rd day of the Cape Town Test that skipper Steve Smith and vice-captain decided to hatch a plan to tamper with the ball. South Africa’s lead was over 100 in the 2nd innings with just a wicket down. The ball wasn’t doing much which was helping South Africa strengthen their position in the match and the series.
The Shocking plan by Smith and Warner
Smith hatched a plan with other senior Australian players- Smith referred them as the leadership group. However, it was found out that only Smith and Warner among others were involved in the plan. Cameron Bancroft being in the vicinity of the discussion between the duo was given the responsibility to carry out the heinous task.
Bancroft admitted that he used a yellow sandpaper from the kit bag. They wanted to get some loose dirt from the pitch stuck to it when they came back into the field and then using it to roughen up the ball. It was an outrageous plan, to say the least. TV cameras caught Bancroft applying the substance on the ball. After being informed by Peter Handscomb he became more nervous and inserted the sandpaper in front of his trousers.
He admitted to the foul play at the post-day press conference. It was indeed a shameful moment for all Australians. The Prime Minister was in a shock following the incident. Cricket Australia handed Smith and Warner a one-year suspension while Bancroft was also removed from the team for 9 months. Since then it has been a challenging few days for the trio.

Warner breaks down in a press conference after returning to Australia
David Warner after returning to Australia broke down during a press conference. The southpaw stated that he is well aware of the fact that he might never play for Australian again. However, he was hopeful of regaining the lost faith from his fans and supporter. Addressing the media he said, “There’s a tiny ray of hope that I may one day be given the privilege of playing for my country again but I’m resigned to the fact that it may never happen.I want you [Cricket Australia] to know that I fully support your review into the culture of the Australian cricket team.
To South African players, administration and fans, I apologise unreservedly for my part in this and I am sorry. I bought the game into disrepute on your soil. To all Australians, I can honestly say I have only ever wanted to bring glory to my country by playing cricket. In striving to do so, I have made a decision which has had an opposite effect and it’s one that I’ll regret for as long as I’ll live. I will seek out advice and expertise to help me make serious changes.
Following his suspension, this was the first time that Warner shared a post on his social networking handles. Taking to his Instagram handle, Warner shared a heartwarming force where he eventually urges his fans indirectly to never forget him. Such beautiful lines it was. “They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old, years shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, at the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them, lest we forget.”
