Part of MS Dhoni’s legacy has formed due to his captaincy exploits with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). MS Dhoni has guided the yellow army to not only three IPL titles and a couple of champions league T20 victories but also to the playoffs of the extravaganza every year CSK played. Deepak Chahar, who shone under the leadership of the keeper-batsman has revealed a key trait about him.

Deepak Chahar first played under MS Dhoni in 2016 for the Rising Pune Supergiants and featured only in five games that season and the next. It was only since 2018 that the 27-year old started coming in the limelight, performing well as a new-ball bowler. In 2018, Chahar took ten wickets for CSK and snapped 22 the year after that. In the opening match of this year’s IPL against Mumbai Indians, he picked up two wickets in four overs as Chennai won by five wickets.

Deepak Chahar interprets MS Dhoni to prefer players, who are handy across all facets. The right-arm seamer said that he likes players who could perform well in batting, bowling, fielding since it helps them to compensate if they undergo a poor day in one department.

“I think Dhoni prefers those who are good in all departments. He likes those who can contribute in batting, bowling and fielding. A bowler can have a bad day but he can change a match by grabbing a good catch or can win the batch with a six or a four,” Chahar told Aakash Chopra in the show Aakash Vaani.

Deepak Chahar further said that in CSK, they have players like Shane Watson, Sam Curran, Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, and many others who are good in all the departments. He underlined that unlike plenty of teams, Chennai is not reliant on a few cricketers and have a plethora of match-winners.

If you look at our team, we have many players who are good in every department. T20 is a format that requires you to do everything. There are a lot of teams in the IPL which have a strong batting line-up or a strong bowling attack but they remain dependent on a few cricketers. If they do well, they end up winning you matches single-handedly but if they don’t, the team struggles,” he added.
