There is no denying that century registered by Joe Root in the third and final One-day International against India at Headingley was overshadowed by his unusual celebration.

The England star hit the winning boundary that saw him reaching the triple-figure mark. He exactly remained unbeaten on 100.

And as soon as the ball crossed the fence, the emotions got the better of Root, who is rarely seen displaying emotions on the cricket field. As a result, the right-handed batsman ended up dropping his bat to celebrate the moment.

It was an echo of the ‘mic-drop’ end of set routine favoured by rock stars and comedians.

And the cocky celebration is yet to become a regular feature in cricket although Grant Elliott had done it when he had hit a winning six for his side in Pakistan Super League (PSL), last year.

But it seems like Root is left red-faced with the strange celebration as he vowed to never do it again on the cricket field. He also called the celebration his most embarrassing moment on the cricketing field ever.

“It was something that I immediately regretted,” English media quoted Root as saying.

“I’ve not heard the end of it, it was literally the most embarrassing thing I’ve done on a cricket field. I don’t think it will be the last I hear of it from the group – they’ve been hammering me,” he added of the reaction of his England teammates.

Root scored his second consecutive century to guide England to a thumping eight-wicket win in the series-decider.

Chasing a modest 257, England were 74 for two when Root was joined by skipper Eoin Morgan. And the duo shared an unbeaten partnership of 186 – to take the hosts home in style. While Root managed to reach the three-digit mark, Morgan remained unbeaten on 88.

Meanwhile, Root also managed to enter the record books with his second-consecutive century in the series. The right-handed batsman now holds the record for most number of centuries in ODI format for England.

The Test skipper Root surpassed Marcus Trescothick’s tally of 12 ODI tons which he had equalled in the second ODI at iconic Lord’s.

Joe Root further urged England’s Test side to follow the England one-day team success.

The Eoin Morgan-led side is currently the top-ranked ODI side in the world. On the other hand, the England team has maintained the fifth spot in Tests.

The hosts will have a chance to improve their rankings when they take on India, the number one Test side, in the upcoming five-Test series. The gruelling competition will kick off with the first Test on August 1st at Edgbaston.

“It’s something we are trying really hard to replicate within the Test team,” Root said.

“Hopefully over time, and it’s not something that will happen overnight. We’ll see big improvements long-term within the group,” added the 27-year-old.
