England’s flying start to the World Cup came to a screeching halt on Monday when Pakistan defied all the odds to beat them by 14 at Trent Bridge. Prior to the game, Pakistan had lost their last 11 ODIs including four against Pakistan. However, it made little difference as the Men in Green beat the Eoin Morgan-led side to open their points tally.

Asked to bat first, Pakistan posted a mammoth total of 348 for 8. The innings was studded with 29 fours and six sixes. Veteran batsman Mohammad Hafeez was his side’s top scorer with 84 off 62 balls. Babar Azam and skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed contributed well too, scoring 63 and 55 respectively.

In reply, England lost wickets at regular intervals at start. They were reeling at 118 for 4 with Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes back in the pavilion. Joe Root and Jos Buttler then scored centuries to bring the chase on track but failed to take their team over the line. England eventually finished on 334 for 9.

England now face more trouble as their skipper Eoin Morgan is also waiting to hear if he will face action for a slow over rate. The hosts were late by 20 minutes in completing their 50 overs. Morgan will know for certain on Tuesday if he is in the clear on the over-rate. The left-handed batsman has said the umpires told him he was up with the time with three overs to go but the Pakistan innings overran by nearly 20 minutes. England still had to bowl three more overs when the stipulated time came to an end.  As per the rules, the captain face two-game ban if their team is more than two overs behind on over-rates.
