Team India opener Shikhar Dhawan had a horrendous start to red-ball cricket in England on Wednesday (July 25) as he was dismissed for a first-ball duck in the only practice game for Team India against Essex at Chelmsford.

Pacer Matt Coles bowled a full-length delivery and Dhawan edged it straight to the wicketkeeper. Dhawan was given an opportunity to open the innings ahead of KL Rahul. The latter has looked in a great touch of late and might be in line to start in the opening Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham on 1st August.

Dhawan had problems with the swinging delivery in the past. He failed to make a mark when India toured England back in 2014. He kept falling to the lateral movement and it was the same case.

Rahul, on the other hand, made full use of the opportunity and struck a fluent half-century batting a bit lower in the batting order.

Dhawan’s place in Test XI looks in doubt:

Southpaw Dhawan was dropped from the playing XI in South Africa. Given his problem against the swinging delivery, the explosive batter might have to warm the benches at least for the first Test.

After securing a golden duck in the practice match, Dhawan was seen back in the nets. He practised his drives and cuts. So, it happened to be a much-needed practice for the left-hander after a bad day.

However, he shared the video on his social media handle.

“Nothing sounds more sweeter than the whack of a cricket ball,” he wrote on Twitter.

However, after sharing the video of his practice, Twittersphere trolled Shikhar Dhawan severely when he registered a duck during Essex Vs India game.

Earlier, during the practice game, India had a woeful start. They lost Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara for just five runs. Virat Kohli and Murali Vijay struck half-centuries – to get India back into the game.

They shared a 90-run stand before both fell in quick succession. The most productive partnership came between KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik.

The wicketkeeper-batsman Karthik looked in great touch from the outset. He struck some wonderful shots and so did Rahul (58 ). Eventually, Hardik and Karthik ensured India reached 322 for six at the end of the day’s play.
