Five Cricketers Whose Career Ended With On-Field Injuries

We have seen many times that injuries have hampered the career of many cricketers. In fact, there have instances when an on-field injury has put a full stop on the career of the player. These injuries have been so serious that players were not left with any other option than to end their career. Thus, these players have had a sad ending to their International career. In fact, it is never easy for a player when he is forced to retire from the game due to injury.

We take a look at five players whose career ended with an on-field injury.

5. Craig Kieswetter

England’s right-handed wicket-keeper batsman Craig Kiesewetter’s career was cut short by a short delivery. The right-hander was hit on the helmet in the County match and suffered a blow to his eye in 2014. The right-hander had to go through a surgery and he could never make a solid comeback. In fact, he had to call time on his career at the age of 27 years.

Craig Kieswetter had shot himself into limelight when he scored a fine knock of 63 runs off just 49 balls against Australia in the final of the 2010 T20 World Cup. England had won their maiden major trophy by seven wickets and the wicket-keeper batsman was awarded the man of the match.

4. David Lawrence

David Lawrence went on to play five Test matches and one One Dayer in the England colours. In his fifth Test match, Lawrence broke his kneecap and collapsed in his run-up. Consequently, he tried to make a comeback in 1998 in County Cricket. However, he could not get back and had to hang his boots at the age of 28 years. In fact, David Lawrence went on to make a career in bodybuilding and had a successful career in the new field.

3. Philip Hughes

Not only Philip Hughes career ended with the last ball he faced but also his life ended with the same. The southpaw batsman was hit on the neck by Sean Abbott in the Sheffield Shield. The left-hander spent the next few days in a coma and breathed his last in the hospital. In fact, the left-hander was batting unbeaten on 63 runs and it was a massive blow to the Australian cricket.

2. Saba Karim

The Indian wicket-keeper batsman Saba Karim was hit by the bail on his eye in the match against Bangladesh in 2000. Subsequently, Karim’s career was ended as he had issues in watching the ball. The right-handed batsman from Patna featured in one Test match and 34 One Day Internationals. The right-hander scored 362 runs in his One-Day career. Meanwhile, Saba Karim is currently as General Manager, Cricket Operations for the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

South Africa’s talisman wicket-keeper batsman Mark Boucher ended on a sad note. The right-hander suffered a serious eye injury in 2012 while keeping against Somerset. The gloveman had to call it quits after the injury to the eye. Boucher was one of the finest wicketkeepers and featured in 147 Test matches and 295 One Day Internationals for South Africa. He scored 5155 runs in his Test career and 4686 runs in his One-Day career.
