Former Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Thilanga Sumanthiapala alleged the Sri Lankan World Cup-winners Arjuna Ranatunga and Aravinda de Silva vitiate the atmosphere within cricketing circles following their involvement in the match-fixing menace.

Sumanthiapala mentioned the duo have been first to be named for alleged match-fixing scandal. Both were star players during their heydays. Ranatunga led Sri Lanka to their only World Cup triumph till date way back in 1996.

On the other side, De Silva served as the main pioneer behind the victory. He smashed a sensational century in the grand finale of the tournament against a strong Australian side.

“Arjuna and Aravinda are the names mentioned, allegedly to have taken $15,000 from someone named Gupta,” Sri Lankan media quoted Sumathipala as saying.

However, it is indeed an extreme allegation meted out towards two of the most famous players the country has ever produced.

So much so, Aravinda de Silva still remains one of the finest Lankan batsmen of all time.

Moreover. Ranatunga was an able leader and carried his troops to perfection.

Sumathipala hurls allegations of match-fixing against Arjuna Ranatunga:

Sumathipala took a direct dig at Ranatunga firing quite a few allegations against him. The public war of words between the duo has been going out for a substantial amount of time.

In addition, Ranatunga is a current government minister. He had earlier accused Sumathiapala’s family of having links with bookies. He further added that the performance of the Sri Lankan team has gone down quite considerably in the current time.

Interestingly, Ranatunga believes it mainly happened due to the corrupt management of SLC under Sumathipala.

Earlier, Arjuna’s brother Nisantha filed a court case to remain at the helm for the May 30 general elections. It was Arjuna’s brother and Sumathipala who contested for the post of Sri Lanka’s cricket boss.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports Faiszer Musthapha has appointed a Competent Authority to oversee the SLC board.
