Veteran India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has time and again raised his voice for talents in domestic cricket, who should get a chance to represent the national team. He spoke about wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson, who was overlooked by the selectors.
Now, in an interview to Sportstar, Harbhajan Singh has questioned the selection of all-rounder Washington Sundar ahead of Jalaj Saxena and Akshay Wakhare, who have done well on the domestic circuit.
They refuse to consider Jalaj Saxena: Harbhajan Singh
Jalaj Saxena record 347 wickets in first-class cricket. Additionally, he has also scored 6334 runs in the format at an average of 35.98. He has also notched up the high score of 194 in the format and has been a key player for Kerala in domestic cricket.
Harbhajan Singh said, though Saxena, over the years has bowled consistently well for Kerala, he has been overlooked to play for Team India.
“There is a spinner named Jalaj Saxena. They just refuse to consider him. He has been bowling superbly for so many seasons. Wakhare is a consistent bowler but no one looks at him. And then you say, spinners are getting lost in Indian cricket. He must have done something good for Vidarbha to have won the Ranji Trophy twice,” Harbhajan told Sportstar.
Washington Sundar doesn’t even spin the ball: Harbhajan Singh
All-rounder Washington Sundar got quite a few chances for Team India. But he failed to leave a mark. Harbhajan Singh feels, Sundar, does not turn the ball more often and a genuine spinner should be considered instead.
“They pick this guy called Washington Sundar, who doesn’t even spin the ball. I just don’t get it. Why don’t you encourage a bowler who bowls genuine spin, who can lure the batsman out and have him stumped.
“If Washington can bat a bit, so can Jalaj, who is also a proper spinner,” he added.
