Former Indian spin legend Harbhajan Singh has raised questions regarding Team India’s squad selection in the recent Test series versus New Zealand. He said that Shubman Gill should have been given a chance in the place of Prithvi Shaw as an opener.

The Indian team suffered a 0-2 series loss versus the Kiwis, who had earlier whitewashed India in the ODI series as well.

All in all, the tour of New Zealand was no success by any means, and Harbhajan was quick to question why Gill was not handed an opportunity.

While Shaw had been struggling in the lead up to the second Test, he did score a fifty in the match, justifying his selection in the team.

Harbhajan, who himself, hails from the same state, in his interview, did not mince his words and launched an assault over the management. He said that Gill deserved the chance to open for India.

Earlier the youngster was also overlooked in the favour of Shaw, against a series versus South Africa.

Fondly known as ‘Bhajji’, Harbhajan further added that the Indian management was guilty of wasting the careers of young players.

In the lead-up to the Test series versus New Zealand, Gill had impressed in his stint with India ‘A’, wherein he scored a double ton and a century after which he was called up to the senior side.

However, the 20-year-old had to warm the bench, as Shaw was preferred in his place as an opener alongside Mayank Agarwal.
