Former India wicketkeeper Surinder Khanna has lavished praise on MS Dhoni and revealed that he was the one who spotted the latter during a trial in Ranchi. MS Dhoni was pretty much an unknown face when he made his debut for Team India in 2004.

In no time, he cemented his place in the team and went on to become one of the all-time greats. The former India skipper is one of the most decorated wicketkeeper-batsmen in the history of cricket. The World Cup-winning captain is the third in the list of most dismissals as wicketkeeper.

Apart from Mark Boucher and Adam Gilchrist, he is the only wicketkeeper to have more than 800 dismissals in international cricket. With the bat, he is one of the very players in the history of the game who have scored more than 10,000 runs in ODIs. In Tests, he has scored nearly 5,000 runs while in T20Is, he has more than 1,600 runs.

In an exclusive interview with CricketAddictor, Surinder Khanna pointed out how MS Dhoni excelled despite not having a copybook technique. At the same time, he was quick to tell the youngsters not to copy the India legend.

“I think one should not curb his natural style. Dhoni has shown it at the highest level for such a long time. He has been outstanding. There has been no finisher like him in the game. His record in captaincy is good too and whenever India needed him, he scored. In wicketkeeping, he has done a commendable job too despite not having the copybook technique,” Surinder Khanna said while also stating that young wicketkeepers should not copy the former India skipper.

He further revealed he was the first who spotted MS Dhoni during a trial in Ranchi. Many still don’t know Surinder Khanna’s contribution in unearthing MS Dhoni but the 64-year old said it does not matter to him.

“Had Dhoni been copybook, it would have added more grace to his already illustrious career. But as far as his value is concerned, there is no comparison. I spotted him first at the Steel Authority trials in Ranchi. It does not matter whether he acknowledges me or nothe said.
