Former India batsman Yuvraj Singh on Sunday recalled his battle with cancer. The legendary batsman said that he got diagnosed with the disease when he was in the peak of his career. The world was at his feat in 2011 when he helped India win the World Cup after a long gap of 28 years.

Yuvraj Singh was India’s star man as he impressed with both bat and ball to walk away with the Man of the Tournament prize. But just few weeks after that historic triumph, his world came crashing down when he was diagnosed with cancer. In fact, Yuvraj Singh had been battling the initial stages of cancer even before the tournament.

But the fighter he is, the World Cup-winner fought his way back from cancer and went on to make a fairytale return to the cricket field. But unfortunately, Yuvraj Singh never really managed to rediscover his old mojo. He did play some impressive knocks but struggled for consistency and could not cement his place in the team. The former batsman eventually retired from the game last year after failing to find a place in India’s World Cup squad.

“I think it is something that you cannot express in words, unfortunately, the moment came when I was in the peak of my career. We had won the 50-over World Cup, Sourav Ganguly had just retired, I was looking to play Test cricket, and then I got diagnosed with cancer. It was disappointing. But if you look at the good part, I was young, my family had a hard time in dealing with it but my mother was very supportive,” Yuvraj Singh told Kevin Pietersen during a live session on Instagram.

“I came back, everyone said I won’t make a comeback, but I did. I was very inspired by Lance Armstrong, I am watching the Last Dance on Netflix now, I now think I could have retired for a year then and I could have made a comeback then, but I wanted to play Test cricket. I did not want to be a story of someone who just makes a comeback from cancer,” he added.

Irrespective of how the latter part of his career panned out, Yuvraj Singh is rightly regarded as one of India’s greatest match-winners. He was an indispensable part of the ODI and T20I teams before the cancer. Yuvraj Singh helped the country win the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and several other big series.
