Windies Cricket Board have named senior batsman Chris Gayle as the vice-captain for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 in England and Wales starting from May 30. The Universe Boss will work with skipper Jason Holder and play some good cricket at the biggest cricketing extravaganza.

Meanwhile, this will be Chris Gayle’s last World Cup and the southpaw will be desperate to make it worth remembering. He has already announced his retirement from ODIs after the marquee event. However, since then, he has been in tremendous form scoring two centuries against England and then forging a terrific opening partnership with KL Rahul in the Indian Premier League for the Kings XI Punjab.

It is an honour to represent Windies

Although Punjab had an inconsistent run in the tournament, Gayle played some good knocks. Chris Gayle scored 490 runs from 13 games including four fifties. He will look to continue this swashbuckling form going into the showpiece event. The 39-year-old Gayle admitted that it is an honour to represent Windies and said that this World Cup is special to him. He also said that it is his responsibility to support Jason Holder being a senior player.

“It is always an honour to represent the West Indies in any format and this World Cup for me is special. As a senior player it is my responsibility to support the captain and everyone else in the team,” Gayle said in an official statement released by Cricket West Indies

Furthermore, Chris Gayle sounded confident of doing well in the upcoming tournament. Windies have come through the Qualifiers and will look to cause some major upsets when they begin their campaign against Pakistan on May 31.

“This will probably be the biggest World Cup, so there will be great expectations and I know we will do very well for the people of the West Indies,” he concluded.
