Mohammad Kaif highlighted the example of MS Dhoni to point out Team India’s basic selection mistakes in ICC tournaments. Mohammad Kaif stressed how India played Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal in T20 World Cup 2022 last year, which emerged as one of the biggest mistakes for India’s failure to win the tournament.
India last won the ICC trophy in 2013 under skipper MS Dhoni. The former Indian skipper led India to three ICC titles- T20 World Cup in 2007, ODI World Cup in 2011, and Champions Trophy in 2013. However, India has not won any ICC titles for the last 10 years.

The Major Strength Of MS Dhoni Is Backing His Players: Mohammed Kaif
During an interaction on ‘Virtual Encounters’ on DD India, former India batter Mohammad Kaif was asked whether Team India is missing MS Dhoni as captain in ICC events. To this, Kaif replied Team India’s failure in ICC events is not due to MS Dhoni’s absence but because of basic selection mistakes.
Citing examples of the T20 World Cup 2022, Kaif pointed out how India picked Ravichandran Ashwin over Yuzvendra Chahal in the tournament. Kaif also reckoned MS Dhoni knows whom to play in the playing XI.

“They (India) have made mistakes, you went to Australia, you picked Ashwin ahead of Chahal. Chahal was in your scheme of things in T20Is. You dropped Chahal and picked Ashwin. So you have been making all these basic mistakes.”
“That’s why you talk about MS Dhoni because he knows who to play in the first XI. The major strength of Dhoni is backing his players. I think that’s what the Indian team is probably missing right now,” Kaif said.
Mohammad Kaif, who played 125 ODIs and 13 Tests for India, also said the likes of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid as leaders can drive India to victory in ICC events.
“Dhoni has done well. I believe the likes of Rohit Sharma and all these guys are good captains. You have Rahul Dravid as a coach, what else do you want? Ya, you miss Dhoni because he has done so well in ICC events but I think someone like Rohit Sharma can take the team forward. He has got the players and the team to win ICC events,” the 42-year-old further said.

India will try one more attempt to win the ICC trophy this year with the forthcoming ODI World Cup 2023. The tournament is set to be played in India and Rohit Sharma will lead the team in the event. The World Cup 2023 will be played from October 5 to November 19.
