Delhi Daredevils: 6.5/10
Delhi Daredevils, who had never won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title has built a squad in an attempt to lift the much-coveted trophy for the first time.
They have brought back Gautam Gambhir who successfully led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles in the past. Gambhir returned to the franchise after six years being bought for Rs 2.8 crore. Gautam Gambhir would be leading the team, Ricky Ponting, DD’d Head Coach had announced earlier.
Delhi, a strong bowling line-up with South African Kagiso Rabada and Mohammad Shami leading the pack. Tall and lanky pacer Chris Morris, who was pretty useful is the previous few seasons will come in next up. Delhi has also bought New Zealand seamer Trent Boult for Rs 2.2 crore, as a backup seaming option.
Young Jayant Yadav, Shahbaz Nadeem, and experienced Amit Mishra will form the spinning department. Mishra is the only bowler to pick three hattricks in the IPL.
Delhi has a brought some opening batsmen which had made their middle-order lack depth. Lack of depth in batting has hurt Delhi in the previous editions, and it seems like they have not learned from their mistakes.
As opening batsmen options, Delhi has Rishabh Pant, Gautam Gambhir, Colin Munro, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. It will compel them to try out different combinations which may affect the balance of the team.
However, Delhi has roped in young batting sensation Prithvi Shaw. Shaw already drew headlines with his batting skills. The U19 India captain is already compared to master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. The young leg-spinner from Nepal Sandeep Lamichanne is also an interesting buy as all eyes will be on him.
With other teams managing to strike the balance on papers it will be interesting to see how Delhi fair up in the tournament and what combinations they opt for under their new mentor Ricky Ponting.
