Ricky Ponting, the Head Coach of Delhi Daredevils, has praised Gautam Gambhir and has said that he (Gambhir) is one of the top leaders,
“Gauti has been a leader for a very long time. He has always proven himself to be one of the top leaders during his stint with other sides in the IPL. He has a big personality, but it is the drive behind the outward confidence which I think will inspire the rest of the team. He has the respect of the dressing room and the franchise is proud to have him as our captain. I would like to congratulate him on the appointment and wish him, all the very best,” Ponting said.

Gambhir was announced as the captain of Delhi Daredevils, officially, at an event yesterday (March 7).
It was a no-brainer as Gambhir has proven his credentials in IPL.
In fact, there were reports that he himself wanted to play for Delhi Daredevils once again.
He was purchased by the franchise for an amount of Rs 2.80 Crore.
Surprisingly, he was not retained by Kolkata Knight Riders on the IPL retention day.
Although Gambhir had himself requested franchise not to retain him but he wasn’t even much talked about in the IPL auction.
He was sold for just an amount of Rs 2.80 Crore, which is quite less looking at his IPL credentials.
During his seven-year stint with KKR, Gambhir led the side in all seven editions and also led the side to two IPL titles.
He recuperated KKR’s camp after joining the franchise.
KKR was one of the franchises which did not do well in the first three seasons but come the fourth season, they started doing well under a new captain.
Even last year, they qualified for the second round of the tournament.
Gambhir had a vital role in teas success as he was the second highest run-scorer in the tournament with 498 runs alongside his name.

Talking of Ponting, he is making a comeback in IPL as coach.
He was associated with Mumbai Indians as captain in 2013 before joining the backroom staff mid-season.
He continued his association with the franchise from 2013 to 2016 before he was replaced by Mahela Jayawardene for IPL 11.
