IPL 2019: Squad Rating of Kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab had a roller coaster season in the Indian Premier League 2019. Punjab had a good start to the season but they veered off the track in the second half of the league stage. In fact, the Punjab franchise had a similar previous season and they would have been disappointed by their show.

Ravichandran Ashwin-led team won six matches out of the 14 they played. Thus, they finished at the sixth position in the points table. Punjab could come up with a collective performance and had to pay the prize. They were dependent on Chris Gayle and KL Rahul and the other batters could not come up with consistent performance.

Here is the squad rating of Kings XI Punjab:

Chris Gayle: 8.5/10

The combative southpaw batsman had another fruitful year in the IPL. The Universe Boss scored 490 runs in the 13 innings he played at an average of 40.83. Furthermore, Gayle scored his runs at a healthy strike rate of 153.61.

KL Rahul: 9/10

KL Rahul was able to break into India’s World Cup squad on the back of his good form in the IPL. The stylish batsman scored 593 runs in the 14 innings at an average of 59.3 and scored his runs at a strike rate of 136.39. Rahul also finished the season as the second highest run-getter.

Mayank Agarwal: 6.5/10

Mayank Agarwal was not able to convert his promising starts into substantial scores. The right-hander was able to hit the ground as he batted with an impressive strike rate of 141.88. The Karnataka batsman scored 332 runs in the 14 games at an average of 25.53.

David Miller: 5/10

David Miller had a disappointing season for the Punjab team. A lot was expected from the southpaw batsman however he could not live up to the expectations. The southpaw batsman amassed 213 runs in the 10 innings at an average of 26.62.

Mandeep Singh: 6/10

Mandeep Singh was given the responsibility to add the finishing touches. The Punjab based batsman scored 165 runs at an average of 41.25 and strike rate of 137.25. Hence, he had a see-saw season for the Kings XI Punjab.

Sarfaraz Khan: 7/10

The 21-year batsman Sarfaraz Khan was given his chances in the middle order. The right-hander scored 180 runs in the five innings at an impressive average of 45. However, Sarfaraz scored his runs at a strike rate of 125.87. Consequently, he was dropped from the playing XI.

Nicholas Pooran: 7/10

The Windies southpaw batsman impressed with his pyrotechnics as he scored his runs at a staggering strike rate of 157.01. Nicholas Pooran scored 168 runs at an average of 28 and also took the onus of wicket-keeping duties for the side.

Sam Curran: 7.5/10

The English all-rounder also impressed with his skills in his maiden IPL season. Curran also scalped the first hat-trick of the season. The left-arm seamer took 10 wickets in the nine matches and scored 95 runs at a strike rate of 172.73.

Kings XI Punjab could not come up with collective performance.

Mohammed Shami: 8.5/10

Mohammed Shami had the best season thus far in his IPL career. Shami snared 19 wickets in the 14 matches he played and thus he was the leading wicket-taker for Punjab. The fast bowler conceded his runs at an economy rate of 8.69 for Kings XI Punjab.

Ravichandran Ashwin: 7.5/10

The Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin took 15 wickets in 14 matches. In fact, Ashwin’s leadership was also questionable as he took some peculiar decision regarding team selection. Ashwin scored 42 runs and had provided finishing touches in one of the matches.

Murugan Ashwin: 6/10

Murugan Ashwin bowled with an impressive economy rate of 7.50. However, Ashwin scalped only five wickets in the 10 matches he played in the season. Moreover, Ashwin was sloppy in the field for Kings XI Punjab.

Andrew Tye: 4/10

Andrew Tye was the highest wicket-taker in the previous season of the league. However, Tye performance was not up to the mark in this season. The Australian fast bowler scalped only three wickets in the six matches he played in the season.

Hardus Viljoen: 6.5/10

Hardus Viljoen took seven wickets in the six matches he played for his maiden season for Kings XI Punjab. However, the South African fast bowler was on the expensive side as he gave away runs at an economy of 9.65 for Kings XI Punjab.
