After preponing the start of this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), the BCCI is reportedly set to postpone the final of the tournament. Earlier this month, the ICC’s decision to postpone this year’s T20 World Cup cleared the path for the BCCI to host the lucrative competition this year.

The T20 World Cup was scheduled to take place in October-November in Australia. The window will now be used by the BCCI to host the IPL. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place between March and May. However, the BCCI had to suspend IPL 2020 indefinitely in the light of the coronavirus pandemic.

IPL final postponed:

According to a report in The Times of India, the BCCI is set to postpone the final of this year’s IPL by a couple of days. Recent reports suggested that the tournament would end on November 8. However, the report stated that it would now end on November 10.

The change is being contemplated in order to get the Indian cricket team to depart for their tour of Australia directly from the UAE instead of allowing the players to return home. Another reason is to allow the stakeholders, especially Star Sports, to make further use of Diwali week.

The start date which is September 19 is unlikely to be changed which means that the span of the tournament might increase from 51 days to 53 days if the date of the summit clash is changed.

For now, the talks are at the preliminary stage and the final decision about the change in dates will be taken at the IPL Governing Council meeting which is to take place on August 02. If the IPL indeed ends on November 10, which is a Tuesday, the league will see a final not being played on Sunday for the first time. But sources stated that “the entire Diwali week is as good as a weekend, so don’t think that should be a problem”.

“Even if the players are left without any IPL matches, they will continue to remain in UAE and participate in a camp there,” the news outlet quoted sources as saying. “As soon as the IPL is over, the remaining players busy playing the final knockout matches of the league will join the rest and the entire team will fly together from there.”
