Mumbai Indians defended a usually-considered below-par total of 208 in Sharjah against the SunRisers Hyderabad on Sunday. The 34-run victory took the defending champions to the top of the table in IPL 2020. All the facets came together for Rohit Sharma’s men as they managed to outclass the SunRisers in a venue that witnessed the highest total being chased down recently. The defending champions now set their sights on conquering Rajasthan Royals.

After electing to bat first, Rohit Sharma was the first casualty that Mumbai Indians suffered. With the batting line-up quite deep, it lived up to its reputation as Quinton De Kock struck form by hammering a fifty while other batsmen came up with crucial contributions to drive their side to 208. With the pitch slightly on the slower side, Hyderabad found it challenging to find the timely boundaries. David Warner, who anchored the chase, fell for 60 in the 16th over.

In contrast, Rajasthan Royals have slipped to two defeats after two successive victories on the bounce. The Royals’ inexperienced middle-order has stuttered as their much-vaunted top-order has not fired after the first two games. The pressure is the most on the likes of Rovin Uthappa and Riyan Parag, both of whom are yet to prove their worth with the bat. Their spearhead Jofra Archer also needs support in the pace-bowling along with their fielding that needs drastic improvement as well. With Ben Stokes still two games from being available from selection, the inaugural IPL champions need their key players to step up and do the weightlifting.

While in the head to head battle both the sides are equal, Mumbai Indians arguably hold a massive edge over Rajasthan Royals, owing to the former’s settled line-up. However, with IPL known to spring surprises, Rajasthan Royals could spark a comeback.
