A couple of days after being slammed on Twitter for allegedly making unsavoury remarks against Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has received support from several quarters.
The batting legend was caught in the middle of a huge controversy for his comment during the IPL 2020 clash between Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was accused of making a snide remark involving Anushka Sharma that many thought was in poor taste.
Some even went on to say that the comment was sexist as well as personal. But Sunil Gavaskar later issued a clarification and stated that his comment was twisted and was taken out of context.
“Inhone lockdown me toh bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hai, (he has only faced Anushka’s bowling in lockdown),” Sunil Gavaskar had said on air while referring to the viral video of the couple that had surfaced during the country’s coronavirus lockdown.
His choice of words was slammed nonetheless as fans were furious that Anushka Sharma’s name was being dragged in the game needlessly again. Things further escalated when Anushka took to Instagram to slam Sunil Gavaskar for his ‘distasteful’ comment and even asked him to explain his words.

Hours after Sunil Gavaskar issued clarification, fans took to Twitter to throw his support behind him. At the same time, Anushka Sharma was criticised too by many for her statement on the batting legend with many claiming that she did it without knowing the entire matter.
Some even posted old pictures of Anushka Sharma accompanying Team India and asked her why was she the only wife with the team if she did not want to be dragged in cricket.

Sunil Gavaskar's impeccable moral conduct with women throughout his public life is well known to everyone. There was nothing "distasteful" about the harmless joke he cracked.
