Ishant Sharma will be returning to Delhi team for the upcoming season of Vijay Hazare Trophy and would be leading the team in the List A tournament as well.
“Although Virat Kohli is our official captain for the season but he will not be available. On his comeback, Ishant Sharma will be automatic choice for the captaincy post,” an official said.
Ishant Sharma was appointed as the captain of Delhi Ranji Trophy team before the start of the season after Gautam Gambhir didn’t take up the job.
When Ishant was busy with his international commitments, it was Rishabh Pant who led the team. He led the team quite successfully, and Delhi qualified for the final of the tournament. However, selectors dropped Rishabh as captain for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, replacing him with Pradeep Sangwan.
The left-arm pacer did well in his first stint as captain and Delhi won four out of five league contests, thus also making it to the Super League. Sangwan will also lead the team in the Super League.
However, he will be replaced with Ishant Sharma, the senior pro, on his comeback. Ishant will be playing full Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi as he is not part of India ODI squad.
Presently, Ishant is currently in South Africa and is playing the Test series against the hosts. He, after replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the second Test, bowled well. Indian team is chasing a total of 287.
The upcoming season of Vijay Hazare Trophy will start on February 5 with Delhi playing its first contest against Uttar Pradesh on an opening day in Bilaspur.
Delhi selectors are yet to announce the squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and the team is expected to come out after the completion of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Super League.
The second round of T20 league will be played from January 21 to 27 in Calcutta.
