Jonty Rhodes Applies For The Post Of Fielding Coach

Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes has thrown his name in the race to be India’s next fielding coach. Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) came out inviting applications for the head coach and his support staffs. The tenure of current management will end after the upcoming series against West Indies.

Rhodes applies for the post of fielding coach

Jonty Rhodes has been the best fielder to have played the game of cricket. He revolutionised the art of fielding after South Africa’s entry to international cricket in 1992. Rhodes taking his position at the point region became an art every time he came out to play. His incredible flying run-out to dismiss Pakistan’s Inzamam ul Haq in the 1992 World Cup will forever be in the heart of the cricket lovers.

The former Mumbai Indians’ fielding coach admitted that he has applied for the high-profile job. Jonty Rhodes revealed that India have given him a lot and he wants to give something back to the country. He also seemed impressed with what level the Indian cricketers have achieved in recent years.

 “Yes, I have applied for the position of India’s new fielding coach. My wife and I love the country, and it has already given us so much — we have 2 children born in India,” Rhodes told CricketNext.

“I have spent 9 seasons as MI fielding coach based in Mumbai. I have seen incredible growth in athleticism and fielding ability in India over the past 5 years and really respect what has been achieved,” he added.

Jonty Rhodes‘ nine-year tenure with the four times IPL champions Mumbai Indians came to an end last year. The former Proteas cricketer also spoke about his vision for the role if selected as the fielding. The incumbent fielding R. Sridhar has also done an impeccable job with the Indian team, and Rhodes will only want to develop certain aspects and make India the best fielding team in the world.

“I am a coach who loves coaching and let’s face it, the Indian cricket team is the busiest in the world, so great opportunity to be busy and doing what you love amongst players and a team that I really respect,” the 49-year-old said.

“I have seen from my time in India that parents don’t let their children take much risk, and my vision would be for the Indian team not to just be the team with lowest drop catch percentage, but also the team with highest half-chance opportunity taken!’ Rhodes concluded.
