South Africa will have high hopes from their spin spearhead Keshav Maharaj in the ongoing Test series against India. With the pitches in India set to assist the spinner, Keshav Maharaj will have a big role to play. The form is also with the left-arm spinner. Before coming to India, he plied his trade in England’s County Championship and did extremely well.

Playing for Yorkshire, the 29-year old picked up 38 wickets in just 5 games including five-wicket hauls in his last two innings. He also had a decent outing in the warm-up game against Indian Board President’s XI as he scalped three more wickets. No surprises then the Proteas would be hoping Keshav Maharaj to trouble Team India too.

In fact, not only his teammates but also his parents would want the same. Keshav Maharaj’s family has accompanied him to India.  His family members would watch him in the first two Tests.

“It’s good to have family cheering and acknowledging his presence in the team. Further, it identifies us as his faithful fans in terms of support and motivation. What a place to do so than in the Motherland Bharat,” his father Athmanand Maharaj told BDcrictime.

It is well known that Keshav Maharaj is of Indian origin. His father Athmanand is an Indian-born South African who played as a wicket-keeper for the Natal Province. He, however, couldn’t play for South Africa because of the country’s ban from international cricket during the Apartheid era. Speaking about his son’s early days, Maharaj senior recalled how Keshav took to left-arm spin bowling.

“In my playing days later in my career the cricket fraternity and my fellow cricketing friends used to talk about the scarcity of left arm spinners. The idea crossed my mind and during a coaching session sometime later I gave him a bucket of balls to have a go at left arm spin,” his father said.

Keshav Maharaj as well as his teammates, nonetheless, endured a tough opening day of the Test series in Vizag. India did not lose a single wicket and were at 202 before the rain ended the day.
