Things have fallen in place for West Indies on Sunday during the first ODI against India with the bat and the ball. But, they ended up on the wrong side of things, as far as the rules and regulations are concerned. The visiting team failed to finish the first innings in the stipulated time, which forced the on-field umpires to level a slow-over-rate charge on the Kieron Pollard-led side.

On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Shaun George, third umpire Rodney Tucker and fourth umpire Anil Chaudhary levelled the charge. David Boon of the International Cricket Council (ICC) elite panel of Match Referees imposed the fine after Kieron Pollard’s side was ruled to be four overs short of its target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

Kieron Pollard accepts the charges:

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. As such, the team has each been fined 80 per cent of their match fee.

The West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted all the sanctions imposed on him and the team. Thus, there will be no requirement for the formal hearing. West Indies on Sunday thrashed India by eight wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, courtesy Shimron Hetmyer’s career-best 139 and Shai Hope’s unbeaten 102.

Hetmyer was declared the Player of the match. Chasing a tight total of 288 on a sluggish wicket, 22-year old Hetmyer made the match a one-sided affair with 11 fours and seven sixes. The wicketkeeper-batsman Hope gave the southpaw excellent company with a patient 102 off 151 balls and guided the team home with eight wickets in hand and 13 balls to spare.

Both the teams will now face each other in the second game at Visakhapatnam on December 18. The Kieron Pollard-led side would like to seal the series in the second ODI of the series while the Indian National Cricket Team will make a few changes to their lineup to bring their A-game to the fore.
