Despite Kings XI Punjab’s poor form so far in IPL 2020 and KL Rahul’s baffling decisions on the field, his teammates have hugely backed him. Kings XI Punjab are currently placed in the second-last position, suffering their third loss in four matches. Seam bowler Mohammed Shami is the latest one to back the Karanataka batsman, claiming he is a natural leader.
KL Rahul’s leadership came under-fire in their recent defeat against Mumbai Indians when he handed the 20th over to Krishnappa Gowtham. The 20th over ended up going for 25 runs, including three sixes in the last three balls from Kieron Pollard. KXIP fell a staggering 48 runs in pursuit of 191. Their only victory so far has come against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Mohammed Shami having worked with KL Rahul and Anil Kumble for a long time and gets easier for a captain and coach if the understanding is present. Shami highlighted that several players are familiar with each other. It has helped the unit as a whole and touted KL Rahul as a perfect man for captaincy while he also keeps wickets.
“I’ve played with KL (Rahul) and have worked with Anil (Kumble) sir for a long time. And I believe that it gets easier for a captain to manage a player if you’ve that understanding from a long time. And there are many players who’ve known each other in the squad.
You just’ve to tell them once and they understand what they’re trying it. This has helped us perform well as a unit and one person has to come out as a leader and Rahul is the perfect man for it. He’s our keeper also which allows him to have a clear view of everyone,” Shami stated in the Amstrad InsideSport Face 2 Face Cricket Series
