Sri Lankan speedster Lasith Malinga faced the axe for one more time as the veteran fast bowler wasn’t included in the T20I squad for the three-match T20 series against India. This might well be the signals that Malinga is no more in the future scheme of things for Sri Lanka. They have been playing pretty mediocre cricket in the recent past, and it was only during the opening ODI against India that they broke their losing jinx of 12 matches.

Injury has been part and parcel of Malinga’s illustrious career. After a long injury layoff, he was drafted back to the Sri Lankan squad for the Champions Trophy in June, and the slinga failed to impress. He was unable to unleash those lethal Yorkers and slower deliveries which had made him the best bowler in the shortest format of the game.

The man with a peculiar action has been an asset for the Sri Lankan team for many years now especially in the limited overs format, and his dip in form has definitely to do with increasing age. Meanwhile, the Islanders need an experienced campaigner in the team as they have the tendency to leak runs and doesn’t boast of the temperament which Malinga had.

It was Rohit Sharma who simply blew the Lankan fast bowlers in the 2nd ODI in Mohali as the right-hander smashed as many as 11 sixes in the final ten overs of the Indian innings. Suranga Lakmal who had bowled brilliantly in the opening encounter and finished with exceptional figures of 4/13 were smashed for four sixes in a single over.

Meanwhile, the captaincy of Thisara Perera has been pretty ordinary in the series so far. Despite getting off to a winning start in his captaincy stint, it was largely made possible due to the exceptional piece of fast bowling by the Lankan pacers. Cricbuzz first shared the news of Malinga’s exclusion on their twitter handle.
