Michael Vaughan, former England captain, recently picked his top-5 batsman from the 13th season of the Indian Premier League [IPL].

The first player that Vaughan picked was the ‘Orange Cap’ winner and the leading run-scorer of the 2020 edition- KL Rahul.

The former English skipper hailed KL Rahul for his remarkable numbers which read- 670 runs in 14 innings at an average of 55.83 and a strike-rate of 129.34 with five half-centuries and one three-figure score.

‘KL Rahul. He gets in. A remarkable series. He has had a great time at it” Michael Vaughan said on CricBuzz.

The second batsman that Vaughan chose was Mumbai Indians opener, Quinton de Kock. De Kock might have not got the most number of runs this season but he did get those impactful scores for his side time and again, to more-often-than-not establish a platform for their power-packed middle-order.

De Kock scored 503 runs in 16 games at an average of 35.92 and a strike-rate of 140.50 with four 50-plus scores.

”Another opening batsman. Quinton de Kock. There have been players who have averaged more, there have been players who have scored more but I just think the kind of impact that creates at the top of the order is immense” Vaughan added.

The major difference between Mumbai Indians and the rest of the teams was the power-packed middle-order that the former boasted of. Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard played quite a few belligerent knocks at the backend of the innings and their sustained assault was one of the reasons why Mumbai Indians stroked so many sixes between overs 16-20.

It is because of this impact that Michael Vaughan went on to choose the duo of Hardik and Pollard in his top-5 batsmen’s list.

”The powerhouse combination in the middle which has been so important for the Mumbai Indians in Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard” he added.

And, the standout batsman of the season for Michael Vaughan was Mumbai Indians No.3 SuryaKumar Yadav.

Hailing Yadav as a 360-degree player and the best player of spin bowling that he has seen in a long time, Michael Vaughan reckoned that SKY is a player for all situations and an Indian call-up is not far behind for the stylish batsman.

‘My standout player for this year is SuryaKumar Yadav. The No.3. The player that can play all the situations. He plays quick bowling well, he times the ball beautifully, he hits the ball 360, the best player of spin that I have seen in a long-long time, the way he can maneuver the spinners to the boundary at will, doesn’t matter if you are left-arm spin, off-spin or mystery spin, you name it, he’ll find a way of getting the ball to the boundary. I think his international call-up is right around the corner for him,” Vaughan signed off.

As far as his numbers are concerned, the stylish batsman finished with 480 runs in 16 games at an average of 40.0 and a strike-rate of 145.01 with four 50+ scores.
