MS Dhoni’s international future has become one of the biggest mysteries of Indian cricket in recent times. The only captain to win each of the three ICC events – T20 World Cup 2007, 50-over World Cup 2011 & Champions Trophy 2013, Mahendra Singh Dhoni haven’t played a competitive game since India’s heartbreaking defeat to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup at Old Trafford.

Dhoni has been on an extended sabbatical since the World Cup semi-final and with every series that the former captain missed during the 2019-20 season, speculations galore around his international future.

Former cricketers have had contrasting views on Dhoni’s future as an Indian cricketer. Former Indian wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani feels that Dhoni will not return to play for the national team again as he has nothing left to achieve in his international career.

“Dhoni would know better. He has been quiet. He has not spoken about his future plans. I don’t think he would come back (to play for India). He has achieved all his dreams and goals. He has nothing left to achieve. However, the decision is his. What I understand by reading reports in the media is he is very keen to play the IPL. Probably this year’s IPL could be his last,” Kirmani was quoted as saying by Asianet Newsable.

Syed Kirmani played under-celebrated Indian captains like Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, and Bishan Singh Bedi, but the former wicketkeeper still rates MS Dhoni as India’s greatest ever captain.

“With due respect to the captains who I have played under and against, I will put Dhoni above all. Compared to others, the credentials Dhoni has, none of the captains had. Again, I want to say this with due respect because this might hurt the captains who I have played under. This is the truth, they have to accept it. Certain truths are not accepted by and large,” Kirmani added.

Recently, Twitter went ablaze when some users started trending #DhoniRetires based on an online report published two months ago. However, MS Dhoni’s wife Sakshi then proceeded to take to his Twitter account to shrug off the rumors surrounding the former Indian captain’s career. She, however, deleted her tweet thereafter.
