The last year was a forgettable one for Murali Vijay. One of India’s best performers especially in overseas conditions in the last few years, the out-of-favour opener performed poorly in 2018 and soon lost his place in the Test team. He started the year as India’s first-choice opener but before the year could even end, he got the axe.

Things started going downhill from the tour of England where he averaged just 6.50 in the two Tests he played and was soon left out. He won his place back for the tour of Australia last winter, but was dropped after the Perth Test and has not been picked since, missing out on selection for the tour of the West Indies as well as the home series against South Africa and Bangladesh.

With Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal doing well and the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill as well as KL Rahul waiting in the wings, things are not looking bright for Murali Vijay. It would not be at all surprising if he does not get a recall in the coming months as India are doing really well in the longest format of the game.

Murali Vijay pinning hopes on Sourav Ganguly:

With things not looking promising at the moment for Murali Vijay, the India opener is hopeful Sourav Ganguly’s appointment as BCCI President will bring him some respite. Vijay is hopeful that Ganguly would ensure a fair deal for cricketers wanting to make comebacks.

“With Sourav at the helm, I hope things would change. He had gone through this in his career. And he had come back strongly. He knows all about the feelings and the emotions of a cricketer in this situation,” Vijay was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

“I am looking forward to Sourav’s stint. He is a players’ man. He is a strong personality and hopefully he will bring a structure to the process for cricketers to perform well,” he added.

Vijay was particularly hurt that he had been left out of the India ‘A’ and Duleep Trophy sides after being dropped from the Test team.

“That’s exactly my point. I am just not talking about myself. I am talking about cricketers who have been left out, they should have a platform to make a comeback. It shouldn’t be a cut and chop job which leaves players in the wilderness,” he opined.

The senior batsman is currently plying his trade for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy. A solid outing with the state side could very well put him in contention for a spot in the national side.
