Former India opener Gautam Gambhir was left red-faced, on Wednesday, when his comment criticising Virat Kohli’s captaincy backfired instantly. The incident took place when the batting legend was commentating during the IPL clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Abu Dhabi.

Gautam Gambhir was not at all impressed with Virat Kohli’s decision to give the ball to Navdeep Saini for the third over of KKR’s innings. The former KKR captain instead wanted Chris Morris to bowl the third over after the South African allrounder’s fine first over.

Morris had bowled a fine first over, giving away just three runs before Mohammed Siraj dismissed Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana in the second over without conceding any run. Virat Kohli then introduced Saini, much to the surprise of Gautam Gambhir.

The two-time IPL-winning captain, who never shies away from criticising others, straightaway made it clear that he was not impressed with Kohli’s move. While he praised the RCB skipper for giving the second over to Siraj, he didn’t understand the reason behind not giving Morris the third over.

“The brilliant captaincy that Virat Kohli had shown by giving the new ball to Mohammed Siraj, the positive captaincy and a fine move that paid off but this move surprises you,” Gautam Gambhir.

“I don’t get the reason behind giving the ball to a new bowler to bowl the third over after Chris Morris’ first over,” he added.

But even before Gautam Gambhir could complete his sentence, he was left red-faced as Saini justified his skipper’s decision by dismissing Shubman Gill on the second delivery of the over. Saini, however, went on to concede a four and a six to Tom Banton in the same over.
