New Zealand Cricket (NZC) media release confirmed on Monday (May 21) that Northern Districts have made a significant signing ahead of the 2018-19 domestic season in the form of all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme.

Previously, they roped in paceman, Neil Wagner who moved away from Otago after having played for them since 2008.

Much like Wagner, de Grandhomme also has bought property in Tauranga, basing on which he decided to switch teams. The two recent signings now make Northern Districts arguably the strongest domestic side in the country. Moreover, their side boasts of nine centrally contracted cricketers.

It was a hard decision

Grandhomme thanked Auckland teammates and support staffs for all love and respect. The all-rounder also admitted it was a hard decision and is looking forward to representing the club.

I have a lot of respect for Auckland Cricket and want to thank the team and the staff for everything they’ve done for me over the years,” said de Grandhomme. “It was a hard decision, but I’m looking forward to representing Northern Districts in a big season ahead,” he added.

The state team boasts of the likes of Kane Williamson who will lead the batting charge supported by BJ Watling, de Grandhomme, Corey Anderson and Mitchell Santner.

Meanwhile, the bowling duties will be shouldered by three of the country’s premier pace bowlers in Trent Boult, Tim Southee, and Wagner.

Santner and Ish Sodhi fill in the spinners’ slots, making it a wholesome attack. Tested performers in the domestic circuit, Dean Brownlie, and Scott Kuggeleijn, too will add the required depth to the unit.

Grandhomme, however, got his chances for the Royal Challengers Bangalore lately and made his presence immediately. He scored 131 runs at 26.20 and a strike rate of 155.95 from nine games and picked up two wickets too.
