Former South Africa spinner, Paul Adams recently got appointed as the senior head coach of Western Province cricket on Friday (June 28).

It was after an extensive interview process the 41-year-old got announced as the semi-professional coach owing to the first-class cricket. He will now take charge from the reign of Selling Nackerdien.

Adams has currently taken over the post of assistant coach of the South African women’s cricket team.

“The WPCA is privileged to have a vastly experienced coach like Paul. (He is) available to work with a squad full of young talent. We believe he possesses the track record and knowledge on how to propel Western Province to a trophy-hugging unit again,” Chief executive officer at WP cricket Nabael Dien was quoted as saying during a press release.

Not for the first time, Adams has been handed a coaching job

It’s not the first time Adams got bestowed with the coaching stint. He was earlier serving as the coach of Western Province Academy and the junior teams in the past.

“I was quite excited when I got the call from Nabeal Dien, the chief executive officer of the WPCA, that I had been appointed,” said Adams.

“I see my role at a senior provincial level as one in which I have to learn what each player’s individual goals are, to help nurture a team culture and to get each player to perform at optimum level,” he maintained.

Adams’ main aim is to win the trophy. However, he stressed the fact that team performances will be much important than the solo performances. Hence, they should gel as a unit very well.

“You need to tick other boxes like the motivation of the squad, unlocking the potential of every player, understanding what drives them and having the right work ethic,” he asserted.

Adams is excited to see the blend of youth and experience with the likes of Thando Ntini and Michael Cohen. Adams made headlines during his career courtesy frog-in-the–blender action.

The left-arm chinaman Paul Adams played 45 Tests and 24 ODI’s for the Proteas for a time spanning from 1995-2004.
