PCB Chairman Najam Sethi Resigns From His Post

Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Najam Sethi finally stepped down  from his post after a one year tenure at the topmost position of the board. It was expected especially after former Pakistan cricket skipper turned politician Imran Khan was elected as the country’s next Prime Minister. Given the relationship both share, the resignation of Sethi was definitely on the cards.

It is customary in Pakistan that the PCB Chairman is changed with the change in the federal government. “You have said on many occasions that you have a vision for Pakistan Cricket,” Sethi said in his resignation letter addressed to Khan. “Therefore it is only proper that you should assume charge. Given the responsibility for assembling a management team for PCB that enjoys your full confidence and trust.

“In order to facilitate your objectives in the interest of Pakistan cricket, I hereby submit my resignation as Chairman of PCB and Member of its BoG (Board of Governors)… I believe I have served the cause of cricket diligently,” he further added.

Najam Sethi was made the PC chairman back in 2013

Sethi who is a journalist and a professor by profession. He became the PCB chairman for the first time back in 2013. He was appointed on an interim basis by then prime minister. It was because Zaka Ashraf was ordered to halt his works. It was due to allegations for unfair selection during his tenure. Sethi was handed over the reigns as a new constitution was framed.

It was followed by a legal battle between Sethi and Ashraf. It saw the two moving in and out of the office. Shahryar Khan was then unanimously chosen as the Chairman. The decision was taken by the Supreme Court intervention back in 2014.

Sethi was again nominated to the BoG back in 2014 for three years by Sharif until 2020. Sharif’s successor was Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Sethi has been the pioneer behind launching PSL and bring Zimbabwe to Pakistan. It was after Pakistan’s hiatus from international cricket for a long time. He was also the one who managed to assure touring World Xi teams, Sri Lanka and Windies to tour Pakistan for international matches.
