Karnataka suffered a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 semifinals. Though the contest was competitive, a few of the umpiring howlers didn’t sit well with the hosts. Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored an unbeaten 131 in the second innings edged not once, but twice to the keeper in two innings; which the official didn’t acknowledge, and thus it cost Karnataka a spot in the finals. However, their ex-captain, Vinay Kumar has called for the introduction of the Decision Review System (DRS) during the matches.

If BCCI can introduce DRS, it will help – Vinay

The veteran player in India’s premier domestic competition, Vinay said he don’t want to blame the umpires for those calls; as they get very little time to decide. But on the other hand, he opines if BCCI could introduce the Decision Review System (DRS) in the live games, it will be helpful.

He further added the fate of the crucial games are decided on one bad or good decision, and the board must consider finding a solution.

“In most of the games, we will get those decisions which will go against us, but yes, if the BCCI can introduce the DRS, it will help. It’s all about one good or bad decision. I do not want to blame the umpires because they get very little time to decide, but if they can come up with DRS in domestic cricket, especially in live games, it will be very helpful for the players,” he said.

The Karnataka pacer said despite the state team starting the season without their core players, because of India, India A and Emerging Asia Cup commitments; they had done pretty well to make it to the last four of Ranji Trophy 2018-19.

I am proud of my team, says the captain

In the four-month tournament which has 37 teams competing, Vinay Kumar-led Karnataka won three and drawn as many to make it to the semis. Meanwhile, Vinay said he is proud of the way his team played.

“Yes, we are very much happy. At the initial stages of the tournament, we did not get most of the senior players because they were out for the India A tournaments. Many guys made their debut this year. So, if you see our side, with not much of experience, the kind of effort the boys put to perform, in that way we are very happy,” Vinay noted.

As of now, Saurashtra will take on the defending champions, Vidarbha in the finals of the Ranji Trophy 2018-19. The match will start on February 3rd in Nagpur.
