Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul Break Sourav Ganguly And Virender Sehwag's 17-Year-old Record

It was a night to remember for Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, who smashed brilliant centuries for India against the West Indies when it mattered the most. The duo went on to add 227 runs for the opening wicket to thrash West Indies’ bowlers to all corners of the park. During the course of their partnership, they broke the 17-year-old record of Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag.

Rohit and Rahul got India off to a flying start after the hosts were invited to bat first by Windies captain Kieron Pollard. While Rahul played the aggressor’s role initially, Rohit caught up with him soon as the duo took the West Indies bowling attack to the cleaners enroute to their magnificent centuries. Rohit scored a superb 159 off 138 balls while Rahul slammed a brilliant 102 off 104 balls.

KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma added 227 runs for the first wicket:

The duo put up a 227-run stand for the first wicket in 37 overs making it the 4th highest opening stand for India in all ODIs. With their partnership, Rohit and Rahul became the first Indian pair to register a 200+ run partnership against West Indies. It was also the highest partnership by any Indian pair against West Indies for the first wicket.

Previously, the record for the highest opening partnership by an Indian pair in an ODI against West Indies belonged to Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag, who had put on 196 runs at Rajkot in 2002. The latest record is also the 2nd highest opening partnership ever in an ODI against West Indies. The highest partnership belongs to Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw, who stitched 247 in 2015.

Rohit and Rahul’s partnership set the stage for a big total for India, and the middle-order didn’t disappoint. Shreyas Iyer (53) and Rishabh Pant (39) played two quick-fire cameos to take India to a big total of 387/5 in 50 overs. In reply, West Indies were bundled out for 280 runs to hand India a comfortable victory by 107 runs.

The brilliant spell from Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav helped India to seal a massive victory in the second ODI at Visakhapatnam. The final match of the series will be played in Cuttack on December 22nd.
