Chennai Super Kings was the only franchise that signed only four players at the marquee IPL 2020 auction held in Kolkata. Before the auction, CSK had INR 14.6 crores in their purse. The yellow army purchased the services of Tom Curran, Piyush Chawla, Josh Hazlewood and Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore respectively.

England all-rounder Sam Curran was the first player to be signed up by the franchise after a massive bidding war between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. Sam Curran was released by Kings XI Punjab ahead of the auction. The 21-year-old all-rounder who set his base price at INR 1 crore was drafted in by Chennai Super Kings for INR 5.5 crore.

CSK splashed money to sign three bowlers- left-arm spinner, leg-spinner and a fast bowler. The former KKR player Piyush Chawla who set his base price at INR 1 crore was sold to CSK for INR 6.75 crores. Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood who set his base price at INR 2 crores was signed up by the yellow army for the same amount. The left-arm spinner Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore was sold to Chennai Super Kings for INR 20 Lakhs.

Sam Curran has had a decent spell at his former franchise Kings XI Punjab in the last edition. He hit the peak performance when he bagged a sensational hat-trick. However, he failed to live up to the reputation. His lack of consistency forced KXIP to release him ahead of this year’s auction.
